Make a Weather Station
Prep Time:
Ongoing (daily observations recommended)
Cook Time:
Handle instruments carefully to avoid damage.
Conduct observations safely, especially during adverse weather conditions.
Serves:
9-11 years
Level:
The purpose of this experiment is to engage children in hands-on learning about meteorology by setting up and using a homemade weather station. It encourages them to observe, record, and analyze weather data to understand local weather patterns.
About the Recipe
Understand the role of different weather instruments in collecting weather data.
Learn how to make and record weather observations accurately.
Analyze data to identify patterns and trends in weather.
Ingredients
Preparation
Select a Location: Choose an outdoor location that is accessible and safe for daily weather observations.
Set Up Your Weather Station:
Place the thermometer in a shaded area away from direct sunlight and at about eye level.
Position the barometer in a stable location where it won't be disturbed by wind or other factors.
Set up the rain gauge in an open area where it can collect rainfall without obstruction.
Use the compass to determine wind direction and note it down in your notebook.
Record Daily Observations:
Temperature: Record the daily high and low temperatures using the thermometer.
Atmospheric Pressure: Use the barometer to measure and record changes in atmospheric pressure.
Rainfall: Check the rain gauge daily and record the amount of rainfall.
Wind Direction: Note the direction from which the wind is blowing each day.
Observe Cloud Cover:
Use your observations to describe the types and coverage of clouds in the sky each day.
Discuss and Analyze:
Compare your daily observations over time to identify patterns in temperature, pressure, rainfall, wind direction, and cloud cover.
Discuss how these measurements contribute to understanding local weather patterns and making weather predictions.
