Cloud in a Jar

Prep Time:

15-20 minutes

Cook Time:

Adult supervision is required when handling hot water and hairspray.
Ensure the lid is placed securely on the jar to avoid spills or accidents.
Allow the jar to cool before handling it after the experiment.

Serves:

5-8 years

Level:

The experiment demonstrates how clouds form in the atmosphere and helps children understand basic meteorological concepts in a fun and engaging way.

About the Recipe

  • Understand the basic process of cloud formation.

  • Learn about the role of temperature and condensation in cloud formation.

  • Observe changes in water vapor under different temperature conditions.

Ingredients

Preparation

  • Prepare the Jar: Pour hot water into the glass jar until it's about one-third full. Be cautious as the water will be hot.

  • Add Hairspray: Spray a small amount of hairspray into the jar. Quickly place the lid on the jar to trap the hairspray inside.

  • Create the Cloud: Immediately place ice cubes on top of the jar lid. Observe closely as a cloud forms inside the jar within a few seconds.

  • Observe and Discuss: Watch the cloud closely and discuss with children how clouds form in the atmosphere. Explain that clouds form when warm air rises and cools, causing water vapor to condense into tiny water droplets or ice crystals.
