Pattern Recognition Game

Prep Time:

15-20 minutes

Cook Time:

  • Supervise children when using scissors.

  • Use child-safe materials and ensure a clean and safe workspace.

Serves:

5-8 years

Level:

Easy

About the Recipe

  • Understand the concept of patterns and sequences.

  • Develop cognitive skills in identifying and continuing patterns.

  • Introduce the idea that machines like computers can also recognize patterns.

Ingredients

  • Colored paper or cardstock (various colors)

  • Scissors

  • Glue stick

  • Markers or crayons

Preparation

  1. Prepare Materials:

    • Cut out simple shapes (circles, squares, triangles) from colored paper.

    • Arrange the shapes in a pattern sequence (e.g., red circle, blue square, yellow triangle).

  2. Introduce the Pattern:

    • Show the children the pattern you've created with the shapes and colors.

    • Explain that a pattern is a sequence that repeats in a specific order.

  3. Pattern Recognition:

    • Ask the children to identify the pattern and continue it by adding the next shape.

    • Encourage them to use the available shapes to extend the pattern sequence.

  4. Discuss AI and Patterns:

    • Explain that just like they can recognize and continue patterns, computers and AI can recognize patterns in data too.

    • Simplify by saying that computers can learn to sort pictures and to recognize the shapes of the objects in the pictures.

  5. Create and Share:

    1. Let each child create their own pattern using the shapes and colors provided.

    2. Ask them to show their pattern and explain how it repeats.
