Ingredients

  • Latex balloons

  • Wool sweater or long hair

  • Small pieces of paper (confetti works great)

Preparation

  • Inflate the Balloon: Blow up a balloon to a comfortable size, not too large to handle.

  • Generate Static Electricity: Have the children vigorously rub the balloon against a wool sweater or their own hair for about 30-60 seconds.

  • Conduct the Experiment: Scatter small pieces of paper on a table. Slowly bring the charged balloon near the paper pieces.

  • Observe: Watch as the paper pieces jump up to stick to the balloon due to static electricity.
